Family correspondence, 1863-1866.

Consists of correspondence of Ben, David, Barzilla, and William Trail (brothers), and that of Sergeant Preston Malone (14th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry) spanning the years 1863, through March 1866. Several letters of Ben Trail were written shortly after enlisting, while stationed at Camp Fremont, Indiana (January through April 1864). New to camp, he writes a letter (Jan. 6, 1864) to David Trail, discussing his travel by train to Camp Fremont and various camp activities and conflicts. Includes two letters of Sergeant Preston Malone, stationed at Chattanooga, Tennessee, to David Trail (March 1866), telling him of his hopes of going home soon and of his expectations "to live at Gallatin, Tennessee."

The 14th Infantry Regiment of United States Colored Troops was organized at Gallatin, Tenn., in 1863. The regiment marched to the relief of Dalton, Ga.; was at the siege of Decatur, Ala.; fought in the battle of Nashville; and served at Chattanooga and in the District of Eastern Tennessee before being mustered out at Greenville in March 1866. Its commanding officers were Brevet Brigadier Generals Thomas J. Morgan (1839-1902) and Henry Clarke Corbin (1842-1909). From the description o...

Benjamin F. Trail, an African-American, served as a sergeant major in the 28th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops (Infantry), organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, December 24, 1863, through March 31, 1864.
